Jorgensen Patch, known to Cairns crews as 'Jeorgies', is a patch reef about 45 km north-east of Cairns that Reef Experience includes among its reef locations. Reef Trip describes it frankly as an unprotected site for experienced divers, deep and subject to strong currents, with access dependent on the weather, and lists its terrain as walls, gullies, small caves, overhangs and swim-throughs. Reef Experience notes vibrant coral formations and diverse marine life. It is a very different proposition from the sheltered lagoon moorings on neighbouring Hastings and Saxon. The walls and gullies give the dive strong vertical relief, and the caves and overhangs, lit only by indirect light, host shade-loving soft corals, sponges, soldierfish and cardinalfish. The current that makes the site challenging also feeds it: fish tend to be more numerous and larger at current-swept patches like this, with schools of fusiliers and snapper, trevally, reef sharks and turtles likely, although no site-specific species list has been published. Divers should be comfortable with current, depth and surface-marker deployment, and should expect the site to be cancelled when conditions are unsuitable. When it can be dived, it offers experienced divers a sense of exploration rarely found on the busy Cairns day-trip circuit. Coordinates here are from Reef Experience; Reef Trip gives a slightly different position about 3 km to the south-west, so the exact location should be confirmed. Visibility is typically 12-20 m. Divers who have only dived the sheltered moorings should build current experience elsewhere before attempting it here.
