Meet the site
The Nursery is the sheltered, western-facing quarter of Julian Rocks and is where almost every diver's first experience of this famous site begins. Protected from the swell and current that can make the eastern and southern sides more demanding, it is a shallow boulder-strewn reef in 5 to 12 metres, laced with overgrown anchors, small caves and a low bommie known locally as Split Bommie, all within Nguthungulli Julian Rocks Nature Reserve, one of the first marine sanctuary zones declared in NSW. What makes the Nursery remarkable is not its topography but its sheer density and diversity of life: this is the point where the warm, southward-flowing East Australian Current meets cooler temperate water pushing up from the south, and the result is one of the most fish-rich small dive sites in Australia, with well over 1,000 recorded marine species and upwards of 530 species of fish sharing the same few hundred square metres of reef. On any given dive divers can expect green and loggerhead turtles resting under ledges, wobbegong sharks tucked into crevices, octopus and cuttlefish changing colour on the sand, colourful tropical reef fish alongside temperate species that would normally be found much further south, and — in season — leopard (zebra) sharks lying in the open sand patches through summer and grey nurse sharks moving onto the site in the cooler months. Because the depths are shallow and the site is largely current-free, the Nursery is used for open-water certification dives, refresher dives and snorkelling as much as for recreational diving, and it is also the default second or third dive of the day when swell makes the more exposed sites (Cod Hole, the Needles) unworkable. Visibility is the one unpredictable factor: it can be gin-clear at 15-20 m on a good day or reduced to 5 m within hours as the current shifts, which is part of what makes Julian Rocks such a dynamic site to revisit. For a first ocean dive, a first shark or turtle encounter, or simply an easy relaxed dive between the more challenging sites at the rocks, the Nursery is hard to beat.
