The K'gari (written 'Kgari' in older sources) is another of the historic hulls placed on the Roy Rufus Artificial Reef. Marinelife.org.au lists the Kgari with the date 1897, and the Fraser Coast diving guide gives the hull's depth as about 16 m. Hervey Bay Dive Centre includes the 'K'Gari Wreck' in its local wreck-dive trips. The name is the Butchulla name for Fraser Island, which lies just across the strait.
More than a century old and several decades underwater, the hull is heavily broken down and encrusted, forming a low reef on the sand. The growth of soft corals, sponges and ascidians supports scorpionfish and stonefish, nudibranchs and crabs, and bigger residents – wobbegongs, stingrays, gropers, coral trout and turtles – move between the K'gari and the other structures on the reef.
Diving here follows the reef's rules: go at high-water slack, expect around 5 m of visibility, and don't stray from the hull. There is no documented penetration, and the age of the structure makes entry inadvisable anyway.
The K'gari is best done as part of a two-dive local trip with the 3 Ships or the Goori, giving a sense of how the reef's old wooden and steel working boats have become habitat. It suits Open Water divers with a guide and photographers interested in macro life. Because the hull is low and broken, it is easy to swim past it in green water; descend the line all the way to the structure and keep it in sight for the whole dive. Nudibranchs, flatworms and small crabs are the rewards for a slow, close inspection of the encrusting growth, and wobbegongs are often tucked against the hull.
