Meet the site
Kelso Reef is a mid-shelf reef about 47 nautical miles north of Townsville, off the Palm Island group. In the 1980s and 1990s it was a regular Townsville day-trip reef with coral gardens of brain, hedge, honeycomb and plate corals and drop-offs to around 20 m, and dive guides still list it as a beginner-friendly site with maximum depths of about 15–21 m and 'great corals and snorkelling'. More recent observations are less glowing. The Marine Life Network notes low coral cover after successive cyclones, with the reef in recovery and fish life dominated by smaller species. The reef layout – shallow coral gardens on the top and upper slope, a clear drop-off on the exposed faces and sand below – is typical of the Townsville mid-shelf, and when coral recovers these reefs can rebound quickly. Expect damselfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, fusiliers and coral trout, with the odd large cod under ledges, reef sharks on the edges and turtles. Kelso's neighbour, Little Kelso Reef, has a documented north-eastern drop-off with gullies, caves and swim-throughs and is the more interesting of the pair for experienced divers. Kelso's main drawback today is distance: at around 3–3.5 hours from Townsville it is further than the regular day-trip reefs, and no operator currently lists it as a standard destination. It is better approached by private charter from Lucinda or from Orpheus Island, which lie much closer. For divers on a liveaboard or private charter heading north, it is worth a look as a relaxed shallow dive; for most visitors John Brewer, Lodestone or Keeper will offer better value.
