Kings Beach is Caloundra's most accessible snorkel and shore dive. Scuba World lists it with Point Cartwright, Point Arkwright and Noosa National Park as the Sunshine Coast's shore snorkelling headlands, and Scuba Diver Life and PADI include it among the region's shore dives. The most detailed description comes from Jonathan Sri, who writes about the reef 'immediately northeast of Kings Beach in front of the boat ramp', just beyond the public pool and surf club.
The best area, he notes, is close to shore just to the left of the boat ramp as you look out to sea, where the water is more sheltered and visibility better than on the exposed eastern side. In a short visit he recorded over 40 fish species, along with toadstool leather corals, cauliflower corals, electric-blue soft corals, sea anemones, starfish, nudibranchs and sea cucumbers. Larger visitors include wobbegong sharks, turtles and occasionally moray eels. A local forum also describes basic diving and snorkelling along the reef north towards Brays Rock.
It is a shallow site – most of the interest is within 50-60 m of the beach in a few metres of water – and conditions decide everything. The Sea Slug Forum describes Caloundra diving as shallow, surgy and mostly dirty, and Jonathan Sri recommends winds under 20 km/h, swell under 1 m, no recent rain, lower tide and ideally north-easterly winds, from which the south-facing shore is sheltered.
With parking, toilets, showers and cafes a few steps away, Kings Beach suits families, snorkellers and new divers on the right day. Watch for boats at the ramp, and remember the beach here is unpatrolled.
