Kings Beach lies west of Petrel Cove and the Bluff, below Kings Head, on the rugged southern coast of the Fleurieu. It is known mainly for its coastal walks – the Petrel Cove to Kings Head trail and the Heysen Trail – and as a rocky, scenic beach used by fishers and rockpool explorers. It was included on this region's list, but no dive guide consulted describes it as a dive site. The coast here is a mix of granite and older metamorphic rock, with rocky reef, gutters, kelp and rock pools. Similar habitat nearby supports seadragons, crayfish, blue groper, harlequin fish, sweep and wrasse, and rock pools at low tide reveal anemones, sea stars, crabs and chitons. These are expectations based on the surrounding coast rather than documented dive observations. The dominant factor is exposure. The beach faces the open Southern Ocean and receives swell on most days; rips and surges make it unsuitable for diving except on rare flat days, and even then only for experienced shore divers who have assessed the entry and exit from the clifftop. Snorkelling or exploring the rock pools at low tide is the more practical way to enjoy the site. Divers wanting a reliable Victor Harbor dive should use the Bluff jetty on the sheltered eastern side of Rosetta Head, and treat Kings Beach as an exploratory site. Reports on conditions and marine life would help improve the record. Rock pools at low tide are a worthwhile alternative for families, and the clifftop is a fine whale-watching spot in winter.
