Kings Chair is a shallow coral site mentioned by two sources. Bounty Divers, the island's former dive operator, wrote that it has 'coral that seems to be even more pristine than most of the other dive sites' and was known for exceptional conditions. The Marine Life Network lists Kings Chair among Norfolk's shore dives as a shallow site with dense coral.
Norfolk Island's reefs are described by the Marine Life Network as '97% pristine', with plate corals, soft corals, sponges, ascidians, sea stars, brittle stars, nudibranchs, cowries and black coral trees, and Kings Chair appears to be one of the best examples of the shallow coral communities. At 29 degrees south, Norfolk's coral reefs are at the southern edge of coral growth in the Pacific, and dense coral cover in shallow water here is notable.
The name presumably refers to a rock formation resembling a chair, a common source of names on Norfolk's volcanic coast.
Shallow coral sites are ideal for snorkellers and newer divers, but they are also fragile, and fins and hands should be kept well clear of the reef. As with all Norfolk sites, the exposure to the prevailing south-east trades or to northerly swell will depend on which coast it is on.
