Meet the site
Kirra Reef is the Gold Coast's best-known shore reef dive, a patch of scattered rocky outcrops covered in kelp fronds about 400 m off Kirra Beach, near Coolangatta. Gold Coast Dive Adventures calls it one of the most mysterious dive sites in the area, and it is used mainly as a drift dive for macro and smaller species. Depth is shallow – typically 5-6 m, and no more than about 7.5 m. Experience Gold Coast describes more than 100 m of soft coral and anemone cover, and notes that the reef is protected on three sides and diveable for most of the year. The small scale suits patient divers: moray eels peer from the rocks, porcupinefish and pufferfish hover among the kelp, wobbegongs rest in the gaps, and nudibranchs and flatworms colour the rock. Local guides also report stingrays, anemonefish, banded coral shrimps, octopus and crabs, along with schools of tropical fish. In the colder months humpback whales pass close by and their song is often audible underwater. The effort of getting there is part of the dive. Divers must pass through the surf break Kirra is famous for, then swim about 400 m – roughly 20 minutes – to reach the reef, which has no marker buoys, so it is easy to lose the reef or a buddy in visibility that is often only around 5 m. Snorkelling from the surface is poor because of the visibility, so skin diving to 2 m or more is needed. For fit, experienced shore divers with good navigation, it offers a rare southern Gold Coast shore dive; others should join a boat drift dive.
