Meet the site
Klein Point is an industrial jetty rather than a recreational one. It serves the large limestone quarry on the cliffs south of Stansbury, which has supplied limestone for cement manufacture in Adelaide for decades, and ships and barges load here via a conveyor running out along the structure. The jetty stands in shallow to moderate depth, roughly 3-10 m, over a sand, rubble and seagrass bottom typical of this stretch of Gulf St Vincent. In principle, any long-standing structure in these waters attracts the same encrusting community found at nearby Edithburgh and Wool Bay – sponges, ascidians, bryozoans and soft corals on the piles, with nudibranchs, crabs, leatherjackets, magpie perch, trevally and the chance of seahorses or leafy seadragons in the adjacent weed. However, documentation of Klein Point as a dive site is very thin. It does not appear on the Scuba Divers Federation of SA or major Adelaide shop site lists, and there is no published site guide describing its layout underwater. What is clear is that the land approach is private industrial property, so the jetty cannot be dived as a casual shore dive like its neighbours. Divers with their own boat out of Stansbury occasionally drop in on quiet days, but ship loading and limestone dust in the water make it an unpredictable site, and it offers nothing that the easily accessed jetties at Wool Bay, Edithburgh or Stansbury do not. Anyone considering it should first contact the quarry operator for permission and check that no vessel is scheduled; most divers will be better served by Wool Bay, 4 km further south, which offers leafy seadragons and an easy public entry.
