Meet the site
Ladies Reef is South West Rocks' classic beginner and night-dive shore site: a patch of reef roughly the size of a tennis court sitting a short surface swim off the Horseshoe Bay headland, sheltered enough by the point to stay diveable on days when the exposed boat sites are blown out. Depths are modest, five to ten metres, and the site has no current to speak of, which combined with easy beach access makes it the natural choice for check-out dives, refresher dives and the area's most popular night diving. The reef itself is broken rock and boulder rather than a dramatic wall, but it punches above its size for macro life: juvenile fish of many species shelter in its cracks, nudibranchs are reliably found by divers who take the time to look, and decorator crabs, hingebeak shrimp and cowries turn up in good numbers for anyone diving with a torch and a slow pace. At night the site changes character, with moray eels emerging to hunt, cuttlefish showing their full colour-change display in torchlight, and octopus becoming much easier to find than during the day. Because it needs no boat and very little planning, Ladies Reef is also the fallback used by local operators and independent divers alike whenever weather rules out Fish Rock or the offshore islands, and it is popular with visiting divers wanting an easy warm-up dive before tackling the currents and depths further offshore. It is not a dive that will feature on anyone's highlight reel for scale or drama, but as a low-risk, high-macro-interest shore dive with genuinely reliable access, it fills an important role in the South West Rocks diving scene that the boat-only sites cannot.
