Meet the site
Lady Bay Reef is a shallow shore dive on the western Fleurieu described by the Marine Life Network: low, shallow reefs pock-marked with little potholes, home to small marine life, next to seagrass beds that are the real draw. The network reports a large variety of stingrays, big and small, with as many as 30 rays seen on a single dive. The site lies about 1 km along the coast from the Lady Bay settlement, 2 km south of Normanville, and is entered from the boat ramp. Depths are only 2-5 m, so bottom time is limited by air and temperature rather than depth. The potholes shelter crabs, small fish, shrimps and nudibranchs, while the seagrass holds rays, flathead and possibly pipefish and seadragons, given the richness of the nearby Normanville seagrass. The Marine Life Network notes that the area is surgy and stirred up in big seas, and that the settlement was under increasing development pressure – the Lady Bay resort and Wirrina development now occupy much of this coast. No other published dive descriptions were found, so the site's current state is uncertain. Lady Bay suits snorkellers and new divers on calm days, and anyone keen on rays. It is a short drive from Normanville, Second Valley and Wirrina Cove, so it can easily be combined with those sites on a Fleurieu weekend. Divers who visit are encouraged to report conditions to the Scuba Divers Federation of SA, as recent first-hand accounts of this site are lacking. Approach rays calmly from the side.
