Meet the site
Langford Island, a small island off Hayman's south-west, trails a long sand spit that has become one of the best-known snorkelling stops in the Whitsundays. For divers, 100 Magic Miles describes Langford Reef North as scattered small coral bommies on a sandy bottom with shallow walls, depths of 3–15 m and visibility of 2–10 m. Fish are mostly small but abundant. The guide's warning is clear: expect tidal currents at all times except slack water. The Ngaro Underwater Marine Sculpture Trail added a centrepiece in 2019: Turtle Dream by Col Henry, a 6.5 by 6 m stainless-steel sculpture celebrating the hawksbill turtle, set at about 7–10 m off Langford Spit. One guide also places the collective-made Anthozoa, inspired by coral polyps, at Langford (the official trail page lists Anthozoa for Blue Pearl Bay). The sculptures were commissioned after Cyclone Debbie to draw visitors back and to provide new substrate for coral. Confident snorkellers can see Turtle Dream at mid to high tide; divers get closer views. Real turtles are common around the spit, and the sand and bommies host rays, goatfish, wrasse and damsels. Coral is patchier than at the northern Hook sites, and visibility is often modest because of the sandy bottom and tidal flow. Langford is heavily used by snorkel tours and sailing trips, especially for the spit beach at low tide, so boat traffic is significant. For divers, the key is timing: at slack water it is an easy, interesting dive combining reef, sand and art; at mid-tide on springs the current can be strong enough to make it unpleasant or unsafe.
