Meet the site
Las Vegas is a deep site off northern Moreton Island known mainly through UniDive, the University of Queensland dive club, which describes it as a very pretty rocky wall and reef full of nooks and crannies, in depths of 25 to 35 m and more. The club recommends it only for experienced divers with deep certification and suggests nitrox to make the most of the limited time available at those depths. marinelife.org.au lists it with the other northern reefs and repeats the advice that it is for experienced divers only. The attraction is the combination of intricate rock structure and the chance of big pelagic fish in open water. The wall's cracks and ledges shelter crayfish, moray eels and reef fish, while schools of trevally, mackerel and other pelagics can sweep along the face on good days, and the northern Moreton area also produces grey nurse sharks, eagle rays and turtles. When the visibility is good – which is when this site should be dived – the wall stands out clearly against the blue. There is little published detail on the site's layout, and it is not on regular charter schedules, so most divers who see it will do so on a club trip or a special outer-reefs day with local guides. It is best treated as a deep, exposed, advanced dive that rewards careful planning: short bottom time, conservative gas, a DSMB and a clear plan for current. Divers should expect water of about 19-21°C in winter and 24-27°C in summer, and allow for the long boat ride home after a deep dive when planning surface intervals and any second dive.
