Meet the site
Leanne's Leap is the western continuation of Submarine Rock, and Extra Divers describe it as a beautiful drift-style dive often done one-way, transitioning from drop-off to coral garden from about 10 m downwards.
The dive begins on the drop-off, where the reef edge rolls over into steep wall covered in hard corals, fans and whips, with fusiliers and anthias streaming along the face and the blue water beyond. As the current carries divers west, the wall eases into a broad coral garden of plate, table and branching Acropora and boulder corals, dense with reef fish: butterflyfish and angelfish (including the endemic Christmas Island angelfish), parrotfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, wrasse and damsels. Turtles are common on this stretch of coast, and reef sharks, eagle rays and schools of trevally pass by. In the wet season whale sharks and mantas are possible.
What makes it enjoyable is the ease of the drift: the current does the work, the depth decreases naturally through the dive, and the coral garden at the end is ideal for a long, shallow finish and safety stop. It is a good choice for a second dive after a deeper site or cave.
Suited to intermediate divers comfortable with drifting and deploying a DSMB. Operators decide the direction and start point on the day according to the current, and on slack days the site can be dived as an out-and-back from the coral garden. Like the rest of this stretch of coast it is reliably calm through the south-east trade season.
