Liars Strait

Meet the site

Liars Strait (spelt 'Liar Straight' in the original post) is known only from the Bounty Divers blog, written when Bounty Divers operated on Norfolk Island. The post describes it as a relatively new dive site at the time, 'rivaling any dive site in the world', where at least seven different green turtles were seen on one dive.

Green turtles are regular around Norfolk, and Nigel Marsh records them at The Crack on Nepean Island, but seven individuals on one dive suggests a feeding or resting area where turtles concentrate. A 'strait' suggests a channel between rocks or islands, where current brings in food and fish; such channels often have strong water movement and rich growth.

Because Bounty Divers is no longer operating and the site was new when described, it is not known whether it is still dived or known under this name. Norfolk Island Diving, the current operator, may know it by another name. Divers interested in turtles should ask. The Marine Life Network describes turtles among Norfolk's regular fauna, together with kingfish, trevally, stingrays, groper, morwong and rock cod, and a broad range of corals, sponges and black coral trees.

Position, depth, exposure and suitability are all unknown, and numeric fields are left blank rather than guessed. As with every Norfolk dive, it will be subject to the island's south-east trades and ocean swell, and there is no chamber on the island. Book through Norfolk Island Diving well in advance.
