Meet the site
Little Hyams Beach is a small, quieter neighbour to Hyams Beach, tucked just to the north with a rocky point on each side. Several guides single it out as a better snorkel than the main beach: the Shoalhaven tourism body notes clear waters and excellent snorkelling conditions, and the Culture Trip describes blue groper, small stingrays and Port Jackson sharks in the kelp gardens off Hyams Point.
The habitat is a shallow mix of rocky reef, kelp and sand. Eastern blue groper are the stars, often curious enough to follow snorkellers, and Port Jackson sharks rest on the bottom under the kelp, especially in the cooler months. Small stingrays and fiddler rays cruise the sand, and the rocks shelter rockfish, leatherjackets, wrasse and juvenile fish. It is a pleasant, easy scuba dive for beginners as well as a snorkel, though depths are modest and published information on scuba specifics is limited.
Being smaller and less known than Hyams Beach, it is usually less crowded, although parking in the village is always tight in summer. Conditions follow the rest of the western shore: best in westerly weather, choppy in north-easterlies. Chinamans Beach lies a short walk further north for another option. As part of the Jervis Bay Marine Park, the area is subject to zoning rules; check the map before fishing or collecting. Early mornings on a westerly day give the calmest water and the best chance of having the reef to yourself. Water temperatures range from about 15 °C in late winter to 23 °C in late summer, so a 5–7 mm wetsuit is sensible for anything longer than a quick summer snorkel, and a hood helps from June to October.
