Meet the site
Little Seal Rock sits alongside its larger neighbour off Sugarloaf Point and offers a more approachable, shallower alternative within the same grey nurse shark critical habitat area — its maximum depth of around 20 metres and complex rock reef structure make it well suited to a full circumnavigation of the island in a single dive, something the deeper, more spread-out Big Seal Rock doesn't as easily allow. Local operators also dive it as a 'quadrant' site, focusing on one section of the island's structure at a time (12-20 metres) for a more detailed look at a smaller area, an approach that suits repeat visitors wanting to build a complete picture of the island's marine life across several dives. Grey nurse sharks are a regular sighting here, generally in smaller numbers than the well-known Eastern Gutter aggregation at Big Seal Rock but still a reliable feature of most dives, and bull rays are a particular signature species at this site, often seen resting on the sand or cruising along the reef edge. Schooling fish move around the complex, current-swept rock structure in good numbers, taking advantage of the nutrients stirred up by the moderate current typical of this exposed headland. Little Seal Rock's combination of manageable depth, genuine structural complexity and reliable marine life makes it an excellent complement to a Big Seal Rock dive on the same trip, and its shallower profile means it is also a reasonable option for divers not quite ready for the full depth range of its larger neighbour.
