Meet the site
Little Sister sits on a corner of the Third and Fourth Sister reefs off Tongue Reef and is visited by Wavelength Reef Cruises. Wavelength describes very good coral cover varying from large boulder corals to patches of branching corals and huge clams, attracting numerous reef fish and larger pelagic species. The corner position gives the site good water exchange – tidal flow sweeping around the reef brings plankton and clear water. That flow is why very large barracuda are seen hanging out over the tops of the deeper boulder corals, keeping station in the current. The boulder corals themselves are massive, slow-growing colonies, some perhaps centuries old, and they provide structure for reef fish. Branching coral patches shelter damselfish and juvenile fish, and huge giant clams sit among the corals with their colourful mantles. Expect reef fish in abundance – fusiliers, wrasse, parrotfish, butterflyfish – plus the chance of larger visitors such as reef sharks and trevally. No depth figures are published; the snorkel area is shallow, with deeper boulder corals nearby. Little Sister and its neighbour Big Brother are paired sites on the Sister reefs. Wavelength is a snorkel-only operator whose marine biologists guide in-water tours and give reef talks; its skipper chooses three sites each day from the company's exclusive moorings according to wind and tide, so a particular site is never guaranteed. Scuba divers wanting to dive the Sister reefs need a private charter, and because the site names are Wavelength's own, other operators may not recognise them.
