Meet the site
Long Jetty is a shallow jetty on the Rockingham foreshore that Howies bluntly calls a pointless dive for adults, while noting that it suits children. With a maximum depth of about 4.5 m and average visibility of around 2 m, it has none of the growth or fish life of the deeper Cockburn Sound jetties.
Its value lies in its shelter and simplicity. The water is flat on most mornings, the depth is safe, facilities are close, and there are pylons to follow, so it is a comfortable place for a first snorkel, a child's introduction to scuba in a supervised programme, or a skills refresher for a returning diver. Small fish shelter around the pylons, and blue swimmer crabs, stars and the occasional ray cross the sand.
Everyone else is better served by the Rockingham Wreck Trail, Kwinana Grain Terminal or Point Peron, all within 10 minutes. Wells Park Jetty, another small site listed by Howies, is a better choice for a children's dive if visibility matters.
