Meet the site
Longnose Point is an inner-bay headland on the northern shore of Jervis Bay near Honeymoon Bay. McFadyen is frank about it: it is not a great dive site by any means, but it serves as a shallower dive protected from northerly seas for those times when that is exactly what is needed. Depths run from about 5 m to 22 m over rocky reef, boulders and sand.
The reef supports the usual inner-bay community – leatherjackets, wrasse, blue groper, bream and luderick, with cuttlefish in the cooler months and weedy sea dragons in the weedier sections. Small walls, overhangs and cracks provide some structure, and the sand edge is worth checking for rays and flathead. There is nothing dramatic, but a slow dive can still turn up nudibranchs and other macro life, and conditions are usually calm.
The site is most useful as a fallback when strong north-easterlies make the outer coast unpleasant and the operators want a sheltered spot for a second dive or for training. It is also listed by the Currarong Community Association among the bay sites that can be reached via Long Beach when the Beecroft Weapons Range is open. Divers wanting more from the northern shore should look to The Docks and Inner Point Perpendicular, and those who want a relaxed, shallow, uncrowded dive will find Longnose Point perfectly pleasant. Darts Point, just to the west, offers a similar profile with ridges and giant cuttlefish. A torch helps bring out the colour of the sponges under the overhangs.
