Meet the site
Manta Ray Drop-off is Bait Reef's wall dive. 100 Magic Miles describes a 'spectacular wall dive from 5 to 30 metres vertical', with deep fissures and a vertical tunnel, depths of 3–36 m and visibility of 12–30 m. Tourism Queensland goes further, describing a plunging wall that drops to 75 m, covered in gorgonians, soft corals, sponges and sea whips. As the name suggests, manta rays are the draw: they cruise the wall in the Australian winter, roughly May to September. Year-round, divers see fusiliers, wrasse, bumphead parrotfish, trevally, barracuda, reef sharks, turtles and Maori wrasse, with schools of pelagic fish along the edge. The top of the wall is a good coral garden that works for snorkellers when the current allows. Current is the challenge. The guide calls it strong, best at slack water during neap tides, and Tourism Queensland warns that strong southerly winds create challenging currents. Divers should be comfortable with wall diving, depth control and possibly drifting with an SMB. That makes it an Advanced site, though Open Water divers can enjoy the upper wall with a guide on a quiet tide. Because the wall drops into deep water on the outer reef, visibility is often excellent, and the vertical relief with gorgonian fans in the blue makes it one of the most dramatic dives in the Whitsunday region. It is in the Bait Reef green zone, and is visited by Explore Group's Bait Reef scuba trips and liveaboards when conditions allow. On a slack neap tide in winter, with mantas on the wall and 30 m visibility, it ranks among the finest dives in the Whitsundays.
