Meet the site
Middle Beach is one of the three shore-access snorkelling beaches Pinetrees Lodge lists, alongside Neds Beach and Old Settlement Beach. It lies on the island's east coast between Neds Beach and Blinky Beach, and is quieter than Neds Beach because there is no fish feeding and access is by a walking track.
The east coast beaches share a similar setting: sand with coral and rock reef in the shallows, and the chance of turtles, rays and subtropical reef fish. Pinetrees notes that the boat-access sites in the lagoon generally have brighter coral than the beach sites, so Middle Beach is best seen as a quiet alternative to Neds Beach rather than a highlight in itself.
Like Neds Beach, it faces east and is exposed to the prevailing south-east to east trades and easterly swell, which make it rough on many days. It is best snorkelled in westerly or light winds, which often follow winter fronts. It is unpatrolled, and snorkellers should check conditions with the boatsheds or visitor centre before going.
It suits competent snorkellers on calm days. The marine park's zoning includes sanctuary areas on this part of the coast – check the zoning map before fishing or collecting anything. Depth, position and details should be confirmed locally; numeric fields are left blank where unknown. For a more reliable shore snorkel on the east coast, Neds Beach is the better-documented option, and on days when the east coast is rough, the lagoon beaches on the western side are sheltered.
