Meet the site
Middle Beach is a north coast site listed by the Christmas Island Tourism Association and by Wet'n'Dry Adventures among their regular dives, and mentioned by Curious Campers together with the nearby Lynnie's Bommie. It takes its name from one of the small coral-sand beaches tucked into the base of the cliffs along the north coast, which are only reachable by boat or by difficult walking tracks.
Detailed published descriptions are scarce, but operators use it as a relaxed reef dive. The reef below the beach slopes from the shallows into a drop-off, with plate and branching Acropora, boulder corals and scattered bommies on the shelf. Reef fish are abundant: butterflyfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, triggerfish, wrasse and parrotfish on the reef top, with fusiliers, trevally, reef sharks and turtles along the edge. The adjacent Lynnie's Bommie adds a coral pinnacle to the route, and the sandy patches in front of small north-coast beaches often hold garden eels and rays.
The site's value lies in its flexibility. It is shallow enough for a relaxed second dive or for less experienced divers, yet the drop-off is within reach for those who want depth, and because it sits in the lee of the island through the south-east trade season it is usually calm from April to November. Like the rest of the north coast it is exposed to monsoon swell from December onwards.
Middle Beach suits beginners and intermediate divers, photographers and anyone who wants an unhurried dive with lots of fish. Operators decide the exact route on the day, so the briefing is the best guide to what you will see.
