Mindbenders Reef is a deep reef listed by the Marine Life Network for Ulladulla, with a depth of about 31 m and a GPS mark south-east of Warden Head. The description is brief: a reef packed with deep-reef species including sea fans, sponges and sea whips. That fits the pattern of Ulladulla's deeper offshore reefs such as The Hole, where the lack of light at 30 m removes most of the kelp and leaves rock surfaces covered in filter-feeding animals.
At these depths expect gorgonian sea fans in yellow, orange and red, erect and encrusting sponges, sea whips, black coral in places, sea squirts, hydroids and bryozoans. Fish include schools of yellowtail and silver sweep, bastard (Tasmanian) trumpeter, nannygai and red morwong, with eastern blue devilfish and wobbegongs among the rock. Pelagic fish such as kingfish and bonito pass through in summer.
Because the whole dive is at about 30 m, this is a site for experienced deep divers with good gas planning. On air, no-decompression time is short, so nitrox or decompression training is useful. The name suggests narcosis at depth was on someone's mind. There is no detailed published layout, so plan an exploratory dive close to the anchor line.
