Moray Reef is the deepest of the named Palm Beach Reef sites listed by Gold Coast Dive Adventures, with depths from 16 to 19 m. Its name points to the moray eels that live in the cracks and holes of the rocky reef. Being slightly deeper, it is often chosen as the first dive of a Palm Beach double, followed by a shallower site. The deeper edges of Palm Beach Reef are also where grey nurse sharks and bronze whalers are occasionally reported in the gutters. Palm Beach Reef as a whole is the largest reef system in the Gold Coast area, roughly 950 m long and 500 m wide, and Divernet notes it is usually blessed with the best visibility of all the local sites. Across the complex, divers see schools of Australian stripeys, wobbegong and bamboo sharks, large octopus, anemones with anemonefish, parrotfish, blue wrasse and stingrays, with leopard sharks in summer and occasional grey nurse sharks and bronze whalers in the deeper gutters.
