The V-Wall at the mouth of the Nambucca River has become a well-known local landmark in its own right thanks to a decades-long tradition of visitors painting their names, messages and artwork on the breakwater's rocks, and beneath the colourful surface it also serves as the easiest and most accessible dive in the Nambucca Heads area. With no dive shop based in the town, this tidal shore dive — along with the general rocky shore nearby at Bolwarra — is effectively the default option for local certified divers and for the rare visiting group. The dive itself follows the pattern familiar from similar river-mouth breakwall sites further north at Ballina and Tweed Heads: a sand-and-rubble bottom in 3 to 10 m along the base of the rock wall, home to rays, flathead, bream, octopus and a seasonal influx of juvenile tropical fish recruiting up the river on the back of the East Australian Current. Nudibranchs and small invertebrates are found among the rubble for those willing to search slowly, and the site works well as a night dive when the muck-dwelling species become more active. As with every river-mouth breakwall site on this coast, the tide is the governing factor: dive only on the last of the incoming tide or at high slack, since the ebb tide pushes a genuine current out through the river mouth that is unsuitable for a casual dive. Visibility, typically 3 to 10 m, depends heavily on recent rainfall in the Nambucca catchment, and boat traffic through the channel should be respected with a dive flag or float. For visitors exploring the coast between Coffs Harbour and the Mid North Coast further south, the V-Wall is worth a stop both for the dive and for the striking painted rock artwork above the waterline.
