Meet the site
Narrowneck Artificial Reef was built in 1999-2000 off Narrowneck Beach, between Main Beach and Surfers Paradise, as a multi-purpose structure to stabilise the beach and improve surfing. It is made from roughly 400 giant geotextile bags, each around 20 m long and 3-4.5 m in diameter, filled with about 70,000 cubic metres of sand; it was described at the time as the largest multi-purpose reef ever constructed, and it was refurbished in 2017-18. The crest sits about 1.5 m below low tide, and the reef starts about 100 m offshore in front of the lifeguard tower. Research on the reef has documented substantial marine colonisation of the bags. Experience Gold Coast lists soft coral, sea squirts, starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, turtles, bull rays, wobbegong sharks, nudibranchs, octopus, nurse sharks, eagle rays and schools of baitfish among the life found there. The bags create an unusual underwater landscape of large, rounded shapes with crevices between them that shelter fish and invertebrates on an otherwise sandy coast. The obvious limitation is that the reef is designed to make waves. On most days surfers are riding it, and the surf, rips and currents make diving impractical and unsafe. On rare flat days, typically in winter with offshore westerly winds, it offers an interesting shore dive or snorkel in the middle of the city. Divers should tow a float, stay clear of surfers and treat it as an exploratory site. Its position just a short walk from Surfers Paradise makes it one of the most accessible reef structures on the coast when the sea allows.
