Neverfail Reef is mentioned in Michael McFadyen's Montague Island article as one of the sites near Pebbly Bay and the Bubble Cave at the northern end of the island. He gives no description, depth or position, and none of the other sources consulted – the Marine Life Network, Underwater Safaris, Narooma Charters – list a site by this name.
The name suggests a reliable site – one that 'never fails' to deliver a dive in most conditions – which would make sense for a reef in the lee of the northern end of the island. The reefs in this area are granite boulders and rock with kelp in the shallows and sponges and sea squirts deeper. Fish life includes blue groper, sweep, yellowtail, red morwong and eastern blue devilfish, and the seal colony and summer grey nurse aggregation are close by.
The row is kept so that the name is not lost, but divers should ask Narooma operators whether it is still used and where it is. If the site is confirmed, depths, position and a proper description should be added. Otherwise it may correspond to one of the Marine Life Network's named sites under a different name. Narooma operators rotate through many sites around the island depending on wind, swell and current, and several sites have more than one local name, so it is quite possible that Neverfail Reef is still dived under a different label. Ask the crew which sites are planned when booking.
