Meet the site
No Name Reef is one of the less-publicised outer reefs north of the Ribbons, used mainly by the Lizard Island Resort dive team, who list it about 45 minutes from the island. It is a site for divers who enjoy searching for smaller animals rather than chasing pelagic action.
The layout is a sandy-bottomed reef at 10–25 m with a wide variety of coral bommies scattered across the floor and a wall drop-off on its seaward margin. The bommies are separated by sand channels, which gives the dive a relaxed, exploratory feel: you can move from outcrop to outcrop, check the overhangs and then swim out to the wall for a change of scenery. Because the depth is moderate, bottom times are comfortable.
The resort's description highlights whitetip reef sharks, mandarinfish, mantis shrimp, nudibranchs, anemonefish and groupers, with occasional turtles. Mandarinfish are shy and live in rubble and branching coral; they are best found late in the day when they emerge, so a torch helps. Mantis shrimp burrows are dotted across the sand, and the bommies host anemones with resident anemonefish. Groupers and coral trout hang around the larger heads, and whitetips rest on the sand between them.
The mix of sand, bommies and wall makes No Name a good all-round dive, well suited to photographers with macro lenses and to divers who prefer a slower pace. It rarely appears on liveaboard itineraries, which tend to favour the moored Ribbon Reef sites to the south, so it is typically quiet.
