Meet the site
Observatory Point is a granite headland on the Great Ocean Drive, about 12.5 km west of Esperance, named after an observatory set up nearby by the French expedition of Bruni d'Entrecasteaux in 1792. Today it is best known for its lookout over the Recherche Archipelago and the turquoise water of Observatory Beach below.
It is primarily a viewing site. Travel guides note that it is often windy and treat the beach as optional, reached by a steep staircase. On rare calm days, the granite at the ends of Observatory Beach offers snorkelling similar to Twilight and Blue Haven – kelp-covered boulders with herring, sweep, old wives, wrasse and scalyfin – but with more exposure to swell and less shelter.
There is no documented scuba diving here, and divers looking for shore sites are better served by the Esperance Jetty.
