Meet the site
Osborn Shoal South West covers the south-western corner of the shoal off Cronulla Beach, a shallower and gentler section than the eastern edge. The reef top here is characteristically flat at 11–12 m and carpeted with kelp and sponges. On the western and southern sides the reef steps down over a wall roughly 2–3 m high to 15–18 m, and in places further, onto sand with scattered boulders. The northern part of the route is the most interesting, with small overhangs and cracks decorated with colourful sea tulips and gorgonians. The fish life is dense: huge numbers of ladder-finned pomfret, yellowtail and old wives pack into the cracks and the gaps between boulders, with luderick around the reef top and Port Jackson sharks in winter. A curiosity on the south side near the corner is the wreck of a small fibreglass boat, with a section of hull, its inboard motor, a stainless-steel propeller shaft and the remains of a bait box – a reminder of how many small craft fish this reef. McFadyen notes that, as far as he knows, only members of the St George Scuba Club dive this spot. The site's modest depth and simple layout make it one of the easiest Bate Bay dives: newly certified divers can follow the wall with it on their right and turn after 15 minutes, while photographers can spend a long time among the pomfret and sea tulips. As with the rest of Osborn Shoal, anchoring can be tricky and the approach depends on the wind. It is five to ten minutes from the Port Hacking ramps and suits Open Water divers and second dives.
