Meet the site
Pam's Point lies about 150 m north-west of Heron Bommie on the northern edge of Heron Reef and makes a more dynamic alternative to its famous neighbour. Divers descend a mooring line into a big field of staghorn coral that leads to a healthy bommie around 10 m high, with a small cave in its side and cleaning stations that attract larger animals. The staghorn field is full of colourful reef fish, and the bommie holds batfish, whitetip reef sharks, soft corals, sponges and nudibranchs. The cleaning stations are the main draw: manta rays visit regularly, particularly in the cooler months, and the dive is often planned to let the current carry divers towards the bommie, which increases the chance of seeing larger pelagic species. Depths run from about 8 to 20 m, so the site suits Open Water divers who are comfortable with a gentle drift. Guides normally lead the dive with the current, and the boat collects divers at the end if they drift off the bommie. Photographers will find the staghorn field good for reef scenes and the bommie ideal for macro. Pam's Point is one of Heron Island's top ten dives as listed by the resort, and it is an excellent second dive after Heron Bommie on the same morning, since the two sites are close together but offer different layouts. It is worth diving Pam's Point on a different tide from your first visit, as the current direction changes which side of the bommie the fish and mantas favour.
