Meet the site
The wall off Parker Point is Rottnest's most straightforward wall dive and sits within the Parker Point Sanctuary Zone, set aside to protect the island's unusual pocillopora coral. The UWA Underwater Club describes an east-west wall with its top at about 5 m and bottom at 10 m, with crayfish commonly found in its cracks; marinelife.org.au describes the drop-off as a reef top at 4-5 m falling to a peaceful ledge at 10-12 m, then a wall that can be followed west past numerous gutters, ledges and overhangs, with deeper sponge gardens toward 22 m.
The Leeuwin Current brings warm water to this corner of Rottnest, and the fish life is a mix of temperate and tropical species. Expect buffalo bream, sweetlips, morwong, squirrelfish, rock cod, wrasse and bullseyes along the wall, with western rock lobster (fully protected here) in the cracks and hard corals on the shallower reef. Visibility is often very good.
The dive suits Open Water divers who can manage a moderate current and want an easy-to-navigate wall; the deeper sections give Advanced divers more to explore. It pairs naturally with the Parker Point snorkel trail and Little Salmon Bay on shore, and with Crystal Palace to the east. Avoid anchoring on reef, and take care with fins near corals, which are the reason for the sanctuary zone. The site is also a good place for a second dive after Crystal Palace, because the shallow ledge allows a long, relaxed profile after a deeper first dive. Photographers will find the coral and sponge colour best on the reef top in the morning light, and the sheltered shallows are a good spot for the safety stop.
