Meet the site
Pebbly Beach is one of the best-known beaches on the NSW South Coast, mostly because eastern grey kangaroos graze on the grass behind it and wander onto the sand. It lies in Murramarang National Park about 20 km north of Batemans Bay, at the end of an unsealed road, and it has a small NPWS campground. It is included here because it is a named snorkelling and easy diving location on the Durras–Murramarang coast, but it is not documented as a scuba site by any of the regional dive directories.
The beach is flanked by headlands with shallow rocky reef. Under the water, expect kelp and crayweed, boulders, sand gutters and patches of seagrass rather than dramatic walls. Fish include blue groper, luderick, eastern rock blackfish, sweep, leatherjackets, wrasse and bream, with stingrays on the sand and octopus and nudibranchs in the rocks. As part of the Batemans Marine Park the fish are generally less wary than on heavily fished coast.
The site suits snorkellers, families and new divers on calm days. It is a pleasant break during a weekend of boat diving at Batemans Bay or a camping trip. It is not a place for deep or technical diving. Check the current park and marine park rules before collecting or fishing. The drive in is slow and unsealed, so allow extra time, and bring everything you need because there are no shops at the beach.
