Meet the site
The Peron Islands lie off the mouth of Anson Bay, south-west of Dundee and about 30 km beyond Point Blaze. They are among the most remote marine areas in the western Top End that can still be reached on a multi-day trip from Darwin, and the Marine Life Network lists them for tropical bluewater species. Fishing liveaboards visit for reef fish and pelagics; scuba diving is incidental.
Detailed site descriptions have not been published. Divers should expect fringing reefs around the islands with the hard and soft coral communities typical of the turbid Timor Sea coast – massive and encrusting hard corals, leather corals, gorgonians and sponges – on rock and rubble, dropping to sand. Because the islands lie further from the big harbours and rivers than Darwin, visibility on good days is often better than inshore, although the Daly River discharges into Anson Bay nearby and the wet season brings heavy run-off.
Fish life is the main draw: coral trout, cod, snapper and sweetlips on the reef, with Spanish mackerel, queenfish, giant trevally and sharks around the island points. Turtles nest in the region and dugong are present.
The Peron Islands suit experienced, self-sufficient divers on an expedition-style trip who are comfortable with currents, variable visibility and diving far from medical help. The islands and surrounding waters are Aboriginal land and sea country; check current permit requirements with the Northern Land Council before landing. A typical expedition combines fishing, a few dives on the lee-side reefs at slack water and overnight anchorages, and divers should expect to plan their own dives with the skipper rather than follow an established site guide.
