Meet the site
Pink Floyd is the newest named site in Botany Bay, identified by McFadyen and the St George Scuba Club in February 2025 about 400 m south-east of the long-established Henry Head anchorage, and named for the excellent wall and the abundance of pink invertebrates on it. The reef edge here is a sheer wall rising from the sand at about 26 m to a top at 17–20 m, with a trench running parallel to it, small gutters and scattered boulders, and overhangs of every size along the face. The colour is the point: sea tulips, gorgonians and sponges in several colours, sea fans hosting spindle cowries, basket stars, nudibranchs and yellow-kneed sea spiders. It is also a serious macro site, with Sydney pygmy pipehorses, sawtooth pipefish (three together on one dive), long-snouted boarfish, pineapplefish under the ledges and blue devilfish in the overhangs; weedy seadragons were present historically but have declined since 2022. Over the reef large schools of silver sweep and yellowtail move about, and near the top of the wall at the starting point there are thousands of one-spot pullers. Port Jackson sharks, cuttlefish and octopus complete the list. As with all the entrance sites, tide governs conditions – incoming or high is best, with 15–25 m visibility – and current can be strong enough that the site is often dived as a drift with a live boat. McFadyen says it needs quite a few dives to explore properly even on a scooter. It is a private-boat site with no charter service, ten to fifteen minutes from the Botany Bay ramps, and a natural first dive before Bare Island or Henry Head.
