Meet the site
Plantation Point is a grassy reserve on a low rocky point between Vincentia and Huskisson, flanked by Barfleur and Nelsons beaches on the western shore of Jervis Bay.
Underwater, the rocky reef around the point drops gently to sand and seagrass at up to about 10 m. The seagrass and weed are the key habitat: weedy sea dragons, pipefish and cuttlefish are reported, octopus hunt among the rocks, and rays and luderick are common. At night the seagrass comes alive with crustaceans and cephalopods, which is why the site is favoured for night dives. Visibility is moderate – typically 5–15 m – and drops after rain when nearby creeks discolour the western shore.
The entry is easy from the beach, the depth is shallow and the reserve has picnic tables, barbecues and a playground, making it a practical training site and a pleasant place for non-diving companions. The main hazards are chop in strong north-easterly winds and occasional small boats and kayaks, so tow a float. Scuba-specific published documentation is limited, so data confidence is moderate. It lies within the Jervis Bay Marine Park. For night dives, a primary and backup torch and a shore marker light make navigation back to the beach easy. Water temperatures range from about 15 °C in late winter to 23 °C in late summer, so a 5–7 mm wetsuit is sensible for anything longer than a quick summer snorkel, and a hood helps from June to October.
