Plato is an Opal Reef snorkel site described by Wavelength Reef Cruises as current-prone, with large coral outcrops and really clear water. Access is tide-dependent, and the site is visited only when the current is manageable. The current that makes Plato tricky is also what makes it rewarding. Water moving across the reef brings plankton and clear oceanic water, which feeds the corals and fish and keeps visibility high. The large coral outcrops rise from the reef floor and host reef fish of all kinds, from small damselfish to larger predators such as trevally, coral trout and reef sharks that patrol in the current. Snorkellers can look down on the outcrops from the surface, admiring the coral structure and fish life in exceptionally clear water. Guides keep snorkellers in the lee of the outcrops or time visits for slack tide to avoid strong currents. No depth figures are published. Divers on a private charter would find a site well suited to a gentle drift or an exploration of the outcrops near slack water.
