Meet the site
Point Blaze marks the southern end of Fog Bay, about 20 km south-west of Dundee. The Marine Life Network notes that 'most of the tropical bluewater species can be seen' in the area, and it is known to anglers for reef fish and pelagics. It is one of a chain of remote reef areas along this coast – Roche Reef to the north, the Peron Islands a further 30 km on – that are fished far more than dived.
Detailed underwater descriptions are not published. From the regional geography, divers should expect a mix of fringing reef, rocky ledges and coral bommies on sand, with the robust coral communities typical of turbid Top End waters: massive and encrusting hard corals, leather corals, sponges, gorgonians and sea whips. Fish life likely includes coral trout, snapper, cod, sweetlips and fingermark, with Spanish mackerel, queenfish, trevally and occasional sharks around the points on the moving tide. Turtles and dugong occur in the region.
The attraction of Point Blaze is remoteness: few people have dived it, and there is a real sense of exploration. The drawbacks are the long open-water run from Dundee, strong tidal flows around the point, variable visibility and abundant crocodiles on the adjacent coast.
This site is included on the strength of the Marine Life Network listing; anyone planning a dive here should treat it as an exploratory trip, go with experienced local boat operators, and be fully self-sufficient. It suits experienced divers who value remote, undocumented sites over reliable conditions.
