Meet the site
Potato Point is a small coastal village between Tuross Head and Narooma, with a boat ramp on an exposed rocky point. The Marine Life Network lists it as a rocky shoreline offering good snorkelling and diving in calm weather. The Nature Coast Marine Group gives a fuller description: fairly exposed, needing swell under a metre and no northerly winds, with a rip current at the boat ramp. Its habitat list includes rocky reef bommies, kelp forests, urchin barrens and cunjevoi, and the marine life recorded includes rock cale, blue groper, wrasses, moray eels, luderick, stingrays, eagle rays, fiddler rays, Port Jackson sharks, wobbegongs, juvenile fish, octopus, cuttlefish and squid.
This mix makes Potato Point one of the more interesting shore sites between Moruya and Narooma. The bommies break up the reef and give shelter to morays and wobbegongs, while the kelp forest holds wrasse, luderick and juvenile fish. Rays are common on the sand patches, and cephalopods – octopus, cuttlefish and squid – are regular sightings, particularly at dusk.
The site suits experienced snorkellers and shore divers on calm days. Exposure is the key issue: the Nature Coast Marine Group rates it for experienced snorkellers because of swell and the rip. With the right conditions it is a rewarding and uncrowded dive. The village has limited facilities, so bring what you need; the nearest dive shops are in Narooma. Night dives here are productive for cephalopods, but only with a well-known entry and flat seas, because the ramp rip is harder to judge in the dark.
