Meet the site
Quiet Bay is a sheltered anchorage in the lee of Cape Bruny, at the south-western corner of Bruny Island. The Marine Life Network guide describes it as a shallow dive in 4-8 m, with thick beds of brown seaweed in the centre of the bay and rocks surrounded by sand and pebbles, and lists conger eels, small bottom-dwelling sharks and seaweed gardens. It recommends the bay as a good second dive after deeper dives, and notes its remote location. The small sharks are most likely draughtboard sharks or Port Jackson-type species, which rest on the bottom among the weed and rocks, while conger eels lurk in crevices. Wrasse, leatherjackets and other reef fish are common, and the sand holds flathead and sea stars. It is a gentle site to relax and off-gas after a deeper dive at Courts Island or the Pineapples. Because it is so remote, it is only visited by well-equipped private boats on calm days. Take nothing but photographs; the area is little disturbed and should stay that way. It is also a practical lunch and surface-interval stop for boats exploring the south-west of Bruny, with the Cape Bruny lighthouse on the headland above. Carry a VHF radio and oxygen, file a trip plan and bring everything, including filled cylinders, from Hobart or Kingston. Snorkellers can enjoy the seaweed beds from the surface on a calm day, and the sheltered water makes it a good place for less experienced members of a group to dive while others tackle deeper sites nearby. Plan to leave before afternoon winds build for the return run.
