Meet the site
Rocky Point is a headland on the Settlement coast east of Flying Fish Cove. There is no detailed published description of the dive.
Based on its neighbours, expect a reef that follows the classic Settlement-coast pattern: a shallow shelf of hard coral near the cliff, then a slope and drop-off. The Morgue immediately to the west is a gentle 35-degree slope with giant Acropora, while Coconut Point to the east is a current-swept drift with gorgonians, eel gardens and the chance of hammerheads. Rocky Point sits between the two, and as a point it is likely to catch some of the current that sweeps around the north-east corner of the island, bringing fusiliers, trevally and reef sharks along the edge. Reef fish – butterflyfish, angelfish including the endemic Christmas Island (Cocos) angelfish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, wrasse and groupers – will be abundant, and turtles are common along this stretch of shore.
The site is close to the jetty, sheltered from the south-east trades, and suitable as a short boat dive for divers with some experience of mild current. It is exposed to northerly swell in the wet season.
