Meet the site
Rons Wall is one of a cluster of reefs north of Bass Point Island that share the same basic architecture: a very flat reef top at 12–15 m whose edge falls away as walls to a sandy, rocky bottom with kelp and small boulders at 26–29 m. The walls lie 20–50 m from the usual mooring, which sits in about 23 m.
The reef edge is where the colour is. Gorgonians and sponges in pink, red, yellow and purple cover the upper part of the wall, and the boulders at its base shelter cuttlefish and bull rays. Schools of one-spot pullers, old wife and drummer hang along the edge, with black reef and six-spined leatherjackets and large bream. The site's personality comes from its male eastern king wrasse, which McFadyen describes as very friendly and interactive – unusual behaviour for a fish that is itself uncommon in NSW waters.
The dive suits Advanced divers who want a relaxed wall with the option of a long dive: start deep, work along the edge and finish on the flat top where there is plenty to see and depth is modest. Navigation is simple because the wall edge is a clear reference. The name is thought to commemorate a local diver, but the sources do not record who Ron was. The site is often paired with nearby Slipper Reef, which has a very similar layout, or with the Humps for divers seeking something deeper. Visibility on the outer reefs is often 15–20 m in winter westerly weather, when the colours of the wall are at their best.
