Meet the site
Rose Bay lies just south of Murray Bay on Bowen's northern headland, beside a small residential community, and it is the most convenient of the Bowen bays for a relaxed shore dive: park, gear up on the grass and walk into the water. The North Queensland Underwater Explorers Club describes the northern end of the bay, around the rocky point, as the dive, with depths of about 5–7 m. Staghorn coral dominates here, forming thickets with occasional patches of lettuce coral. The staghorn supports its own community of small fish, and the club notes nudibranchs in large numbers and honeycomb moray eels among the rocks. It is a site for slow exploration and macro rather than big animals. Navigation is the local joke. The staghorn fields look much the same in every direction, and in low visibility divers become disoriented easily; the club calls this section 'Bowen's Bermuda Triangle'. A compass heading taken at entry and a plan to return along the shoreline solve the problem. Fishing tackle and anchors litter parts of the bay, so buoyancy control and a cutting tool are worthwhile. Visibility is typically 2–8 m. The club suggests slack water at the top of the tide, which gives more depth over the reef and easier exploration of the point. The club also notes that Cyclone Debbie in 2017 may have damaged the delicate staghorn structures since its description was written, so current coral condition may differ. For Bowen locals and visitors with their own gear, Rose Bay is an easy, uncrowded snorkel and shallow dive.
