Round the Bend, also written Around the Bend, is one of the eleven named sites on Milln Reef listed by Cairns Dive Adventures and one of three Milln highlights named by Dive the World, alongside Wildside and Three Sisters. Beyond its name, which refers to a curve in the reef edge, there is little site-specific published information, so this description draws on what operators report for Milln Reef generally. Milln is a reef of large bommies rising from sand at around 30 m to within a few metres of the surface, with walls, pinnacles and swim-throughs, mild to medium currents and visibility typically 15-20 m. A bend in the reef edge like this usually concentrates current flow, which means healthier coral on the outer curve and more fish working the edge. Expect whitetip reef sharks, turtles, coral trout, peacock groupers and schools of sweetlips, the fish Milln is best known for, along with nudibranchs, flatworms, moray eels, sea stars and painted lobsters on the reef. Dolphins are occasionally reported on Milln and reef squid hover over the shallows. The site is suitable for Open Water divers if the current is mild, and more interesting for those comfortable following a reef edge. Divers should treat it as a less-documented site and rely on the briefing for the exact layout and route. It is a useful alternative when the main Milln moorings are occupied by other boats. Snorkellers can explore the reef crest in calm weather, but the main interest is on the edge itself at 10 m and below.
