Meet the site
Rudder Reef is a mid-shelf reef off Port Douglas, located by OzDive about 5 km west of Chinaman Reef, towards its north-east corner. OzDive describes it as a breathtaking sloping reef adorned with lively bommies, creating a dynamic underwater landscape suitable for all levels. The reef face slopes down from the shallows into deeper water, with bommies scattered along its base. This topography gives divers a choice: stay on the upper slope in good light among hard corals, or explore the bommies below, which attract fish and provide ledges and overhangs. OzDive notes cuttlefish, painted lobsters (painted crays), baby reef sharks and fast-growing coral species. The presence of fast-growing corals suggests a reef in active regrowth, as is common on mid-shelf reefs recovering from cyclones or bleaching. Cuttlefish are often found hovering near coral heads, and painted crays shelter in crevices during the day, their long white antennae giving them away. Juvenile reef sharks cruise along the slope. Expect a range of reef fish as well – damselfish, wrasse, parrotfish and butterflyfish. Rudder Reef is not a regular stop for the big Port Douglas day boats; it is used by smaller operators and private charters, particularly as an alternative when the outer reefs are rough. Visibility is typically lower than on the outer reefs, around 8–20 m. OzDive does not publish depths. The site suits divers of all levels and those looking for a less-visited reef with interesting topography and critters. It can be combined with nearby Chinaman Reef on a charter.
