Meet the site
Sandra's is a shallow, sheltered mooring on Saxon Reef, and Divers Den describes it as a beautiful shallow reef dive with a wide range of anemonefish, ideal for snorkellers. An extensive sandy bay stretches out from the reef, and scattered across it are coral islands, isolated heads of hard and soft coral rising from the sand, each a small ecosystem of its own. The anemones on these coral islands host several species of anemonefish, which is one of the site's signatures: patient divers can find orange-fin, spine-cheek, clark's and pink anemonefish in a single dive. Whitetip reef sharks rest on the sand during the day and can be approached carefully, and schools of yellowfin barracuda cruise over the bay. Cuttlefish and turtles are also regularly seen, and garden eels colonise the sand in places. The water is shallow and the conditions calm, so the site is excellent for snorkellers, introductory divers and newly certified divers, and for anyone who wants a long, relaxed dive with plenty of natural light. Photographers will find the coral islands make neat, self-contained subjects against white sand. For those who want more depth, Sandra's Peaks, a pair of offshore peaks with a valley between them, are a short swim from the boat and have their own entry. Norman Reef also has a site called Sandra's, on a shallow shelf with a deep wall; the two are unrelated. Visibility is typically 12-18 m, and the white sand makes the bay bright even on overcast days. It is one of the best sites on Saxon for a first reef experience.
