Meet the site
Saxon Coral Gardens, which Divers Den calls Coral Garden or Fishbowl, is a gradually sloping coral bank on Saxon Reef that transitions to a flat, shallow, sandy bottom with patches of garden eels. Cuttlefish and turtles frequent the reef edge, larger rays pass through, and the Fishbowl, a sheltered pocket of reef, is a refuge for juvenile fish. Divers Den adds that pygmy seahorses are sometimes sighted amongst the seagrass at the entrance, a rare find on the Cairns reefs and a reason for macro photographers to slow down. The coral bank is healthy and colourful, with the mix of branching, plate and massive corals that gives the site its name, and it is thick with damselfish, chromis, anthias, wrasse and parrotfish. Dive the World describes Saxon as a series of connected coral gardens and sandy channels, with a shallow bommie dense with staghorn coral, open sand patches, and a gentle slope where sea fans stretch towards the light, and lists turtles, wobbegongs, fusiliers, snapper, Maori wrasse, nudibranchs, hermit crabs, gobies and stingrays among its residents. The gentle profile and modest depth make this an ideal site for new divers, refreshers and snorkellers, while the chance of pygmy seahorses and the variety of small life keep experienced divers busy. At night the sand and seagrass are productive, with hunting cuttlefish, crabs and shrimps. Saxon is less crowded than neighbouring Norman and Hastings, so the site is often quiet. Visibility is typically 12-18 m, a little lower over the sand when a swell is running.
