Meet the site
Sues Groyne is a small rock-wall site near the derelict South Fremantle Power Station that local snorkellers and macro photographers rate highly for the density of small life on its boulders. It does not have the depth or structure of Perth's jetties, but it is close to Fremantle, easy to enter and good in most seasons.
The boulders hold boxfish, scorpionfish, reef eels, shrimps, nudibranchs, anemones, sea stars and hydroids, with herring and small schooling fish in the water column along the wall. Searching slowly along the base of the rocks and in the gaps usually turns up something unusual, and the site is a regular venue for macro photography and night snorkels. The sand and seagrass off the wall are less interesting but hold whiting and the odd ray.
This is an urban beach with limited parking at busy times and swimmers, anglers and paddlers nearby. There is no published depth survey; it is essentially a snorkel and shallow scuba site. Treat it as an easy, short-notice dive for photographers and snorkellers rather than a destination for experienced scuba divers.
The groyne is part of a string of small shore sites along the Fremantle–Coogee coast, from Bathers Beach and South Beach to the Omeo and Robb Jetty, and many local divers treat them as interchangeable options on a calm morning. Sues Groyne's advantage is its short walk and easy entry; its drawback is that there is little to see away from the boulders. Snorkellers should wear a wetsuit for warmth and protection against the rocks, and take a torch for looking under the boulders in shade.
