Meet the site
Tallebudgera Creek, at the foot of Burleigh Heads, is one of the Gold Coast's favourite family swimming and snorkelling spots, and on a good high tide it offers a surprising amount of marine life. The creek meets the ocean between Burleigh Heads National Park on the north bank and Palm Beach on the south, and the incoming tide floods the mouth with clear ocean water. Photographer Jon Wright notes that sand builds up in the first bay near the headland before the creek suddenly drops away to around 8-10 m, and it is this deeper channel along the rocks of the headland that holds the most life. Snorkellers regularly see dolphins, rays and turtles on the incoming tide, along with schools of bream, mullet, trevally and whiting, and the rocks shelter small reef fish and invertebrates. The Burleigh side has several access points from the headland path, including an octagonal wooden platform and protected sandy bays, while the Palm Beach side has shallow water close to the lifeguard area that suits less confident swimmers and children. Snorkellers should time their visit for the hour or so before high tide. On the outgoing tide the current runs hard towards the mouth, and being swept out into the surf is a very real possibility; rips form at the mouth in any swell. The creek is also busy with swimmers, stand-up paddleboarders and, at high tide, people jumping from the bridge upstream. For scuba divers it is an easy, shallow shore dive; for families it is one of the best introductions to snorkelling on the coast.
